Ajmer Information

The Dargah of Moinuddin Chishti, also known as Ajmer Sharif Dargah or Ajmer Sharif, is an international waqf located at the foot of the Taragarh hill in Ajmer town Rajasthan, at a distance of 1 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station. It is one of Rajasthan’s most popular pilgrimage sites to visit, and also one of the top places to visit in Ajmer. It is governed by the Government of India’s Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act, 1955 Ajmer Destination.

Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti ‘s Tomb is Ajmer Sharif. The Sufi saint is believed to have lived in Persia and died at Ajmer in 1236 CE. He was known for his spiritual teachings and for his harmony. Anasagar Lake is an artificial lake located at Ajmer, Rajasthan, at a distance of 2 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station. It is one of Rajasthan’s beautiful lakes, and also one of Ajmer ‘s top tourist spots.

Built by creating a dam across the river Luni or Lavanavari, Ana Sagar Lake. The lake was founded in 1135-1150 AD by Prithviraj Chauhan ‘s grandfather Arnoraja Chauhan, and was named after him. The lake consists of catchments that were developed with the help of the local population. Spread over 13 km, Lake Anasagar is Ajmer’s largest lake with a maximum depth of 4.4 m, and can hold around 4.75 million cubics of water. The lake also includes Baradari, or pavilions built in 1637 AD by Shah Jahan.
According to legend, he and his disciples were barred from using Ana Sagar ‘s waters when the Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti arrived in Ajmer. He asked for a cup of water which had been given. When the cup was full, miraculously the lake’s water got dried up……

Adhai Din Ka Jhopra

Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra is an ancient mosque located near Dargah Sharif in Ajmer town Rajasthan, at a distance of 500 m from Ajmer Dargah Sharif and 1.5 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station. It is one of India’s oldest mosques, and also Ajmer ‘s oldest standing shrine. The site is now maintained through India’s Archaeological Survey.

Adhai Din Ka Jhopra was designed by Qutbuddin Aibak, Delhi’s first sultan, literally means ‘shed of two and a half days.’ The Adhai Din Ka Jhopra site was originally a Sanskrit college commissioned by the Shakambhari Chauhan dynasty king Vigraharaja IV. The original building must have been built sometime before 1153 CE on the basis of a tablet found at the site. It was partially destroyed by Qutbuddin Aibak on the orders of Muhammad Ghori in 1192 CE, and converted into a mosque. It was completed in 1199 CE, and beautified in 1213 CE by Iltutmish of Delhi Ajmer Destination.

Nasiyan Temple is a Jain temple situated at Prithviraj Marg in Ajmer town of Rajasthan, at a distance of 1 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station and 1.5 km from Ajmer Dargah Sharif. Popularly known as Soni Ji Ki Nasiyan, the Jain Temple is one of Rajasthan ‘s best Jain Temples, and also one of Ajmer’s top places to visit.

Nasiyan Temple is dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara, the Lord Rishabhdev. Built in 1865 CE by Seth Moolchand Soni, the temple belongs to the Jainism Digamber Sec. The temple name is Siddhkoot Chaityalaya and is also known as ‘Red Temple’ because it is made of red sand stone. Following the addition of the Swarna Nagari to the temple in 1895 CE it popularly began to be called as Sone ka Mandir underlining the golden structure.

Nareli Jain Temple, also known as Sri Gyanodaya Tirth Kshetra, is a modern RK Marbles building constructed by Ashok Patni. The construction of the temple was blessed by Acharya Sri Vidya Sagar’s disciple Jain Sage, Muni Sudha Sagar and the construction work began in 1994–95. The largest ever-made Ashta-dhatu statues are being installed at the temple complex in the year 2002. The temple was expected to cost about 50 crore rupees but ended up costing around 100 crore rupees. Also known as Eton of the East, Mayo College was created in 1875 AD by Richard Bourke, the 6th Earl of Mayo who, from 1869 to 1872 AD, was also the Viceroy of India. This college was designed to provide the leaders of princely states with similar education as provided in UK public schools. The College was opened in October 1875 AD, with Alwar’s first Principal and one child, Maharaja Mangal Singh, being Sir Oliver St John.

Major Mant designed the college’s main building in the Indo-Saracen style which was popularized by Jaipur State Engineer Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. The edifice was designed between 1877 and 1885 AD in eight years. A very ornate central tower like pride stands tall Ajmer Destination.

Taragarh Fort

Taragarh Fort is an ancient fort atop the Nagpahari Hill in Ajmer, at a distance of 3.5 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station. It is one of India’s oldest forts and also one of Ajmer ‘s best sightseeing sites.

Taragarh is considered Asia’s first hill fort and was built by King Ajaypal Chauhan in 1100 AD overlooking Ajmer at the pinnacle of 800 feet high Taragarh Hill. It was built at a time when mountain ranges in Aravalli were above the snowlines. The Taragarh Fort was used as an significant base of military action during the Mughal rule in Ajmer. After this the fort was used during the British occupation in Ajmer as a sanatorium.

Taragarh Fort is an excellent, magnificent example of Rajasthani architecture. The fort has six gates which are huge. The battlements run along the hill-top. The walls are circumferenced by two miles (3 km), and the fort can only be reached through a very steep slope.

Akbar Palace & Museum

A 1 km away from Ajmer Junction Railway Station and 1.5 km from Ajmer Dargah Sharif, Akbar ‘s Palace & Museum is an ancient citadel located in Rajasthan ‘s town of Ajmer.

The great Mughal Emperor Akbar designed Akbar ‘s Palace in 1570 A.D. It was built during his visits and pilgrimages to Ajmer, to serve as the King’s home. The two imposing stone walls that surrounded the palace made Akbar ‘s Palace almost impregnable and unattackable. The Palace holds an significant place in Ajmer ‘s history as it acted as the venue for the British East India Company ‘s historic meeting between Emperor Jahangir and Sir Thomas Roe. During the British invasion in Ajmer, Akbar’s Palace was transformed into a house of arms, and then renamed the Arsenal of Rajputana.

Foy Sagar Lake

Foy Sagar Lake is a man-made lake located to the west of Ajmer in Rajasthan, at a distance of 6 km from Ajmer Dargah Sharif and 7 km from Ajmer Junction Railway Station.

Lake Foy Sagar was founded in Ajmer, Rajasthan in the year 1892 as a Famine Relief Project. The English architect Mr. Foy designed it, and it was named after him. Lake Foy Sagar was built solely for the purpose of removing water scarcity during drought at Ajmer. Lake Foy Sagar provides a beautiful view of the Aravalli range surrounding it.

The Foy Sagar has been a pictorial and important source of water, especially portable, since its creation in 1892. This lake has an area of 14,000,000 sq. Feet and can hold 15 million cubic feet of water. With its true natural elegance, this beautiful lake amazes the onlookers. It looks like a pancake, because of its unusual flat shape. By Train– Ajmer Junction Railway is the largest railway station well connected to major Indian towns such as Delhi , Mumbai, Jaipur, Allahabad, Lucknow and Kolkata. You can get to your hotel easily by taxi or rickshaw.

By Road– Ajmer has excellent highway connectivity and maintained roads to all the major cities. Well NH – 8 has direct Dhaula Kuan connectivity, linking New Delhi to Ajmer.
